On the Mergellina seafront in Naples, in a warm summer sunset, a child spends the afternoon diving, playing games, and laughing with his friend Yakoub, a Tunisian boy. Not far away, an elderly man naps on the shore, until their voices and splashes awaken him, initially annoying him. When the mother calls Yakoub back and the two are forced to separate, a final embrace and a necklace given as a sign of affection transform that moment into an indelible memory. The old man's gaze then fills with emotion, revealing the connection between past and present: that man is actually the child who has now grown old, reliving the last afternoon spent with his childhood friend. Sahbi is a delicate and universal tale about memory, childhood, and the bonds that continue to live beyond time and distance, under the flight of swallows.
